Major vs Minor Arcana: Understanding the Difference
Last updated: July 2026
Every tarot deck is divided into two groups: the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. Knowing how they differ helps you read with more depth and context.
The Major Arcana: life's big themes
The 22 Major Arcana cards, numbered from The Fool to The World, represent significant turning points, lessons, and archetypes. When several Majors appear in a spread, it often signals that the situation carries real weight or marks a meaningful chapter in your life.
The Minor Arcana: everyday life
The 56 Minor Arcana cards deal with day-to-day matters and are split into four suits. Cups relate to emotions and relationships, Pentacles to work and money, Swords to thoughts and challenges, and Wands to energy, passion, and creativity. Each suit runs from Ace to Ten plus four court cards.
How they work together
In a reading, Major and Minor cards complement each other. The Majors set the overall theme or lesson, while the Minors show how it plays out in practical, everyday terms. Reading them together gives you both the big picture and the specific details.
